Cupira lies in the agreste of Pernambuco, the transition belt between the humid coast and the dry sertão of north-eastern Brazil. The town sits on uneven ground, and its map shows it. Streets curve and fork to follow the slopes, and the centre gathers around a church square and a few main roads, not a strict grid.
Outside the built-up area the land breaks into small farms, pasture and patches of woodland, crossed by streams that fill in the rainy season. Roads leave the town toward neighbouring municipalities, and houses line them for some distance before the countryside takes over.
