Dakhla sits near the end of a narrow peninsula that runs for about forty kilometres along the Atlantic coast of Western Sahara, a territory whose status remains disputed. On the map, the peninsula looks like a long finger of sand. It shelters a wide, shallow bay from the ocean swell.
The town itself is compact. Its streets form a fairly regular grid near the peninsula's tip, with the port on the bay side. The rest of the peninsula is mostly open desert with a single road running along it. The lagoon waters inside the bay are known for oyster farming and for steady winds that draw kitesurfers.
Founded as the Spanish outpost of Villa Cisneros in the late nineteenth century, Dakhla now sits where desert and ocean meet in a very clean line. A Dakhla map poster turns that meeting into a simple, graphic composition.
