Daly City lies directly south of San Francisco, stretching across a ridge between the Pacific Ocean and San Bruno Mountain. On the map, the city's western edge is the coastline, drawn as a line of steep bluffs above the beach, while the rest of the city climbs and falls with the hills.
Much of Daly City was built in the postwar years, and the map shows long rows of houses along curving streets that follow the terrain. Westlake, one of the best-known of these developments, forms a tight pattern of parallel curves. Highways and a BART line pass through, linking the city to San Francisco and the Peninsula.
Daly City's rows of similar houses are often said to have inspired the song Little Boxes by Malvina Reynolds. A Daly City map poster shows those famous curves alongside the coastline, the hills and the transport lines that connect the city to the rest of the Bay Area.
