Dancheng is a county seat in Zhoukou, in eastern Henan province, on the broad and very flat North China Plain. On the map, the town is a dense rectangle of streets surrounded by an almost uninterrupted landscape of fields and villages. Few natural features interrupt the pattern, so the layout depends largely on planning and roads.
The central district follows a mostly regular grid of main roads and smaller lanes, with newer residential districts added around the edges. Outside town, straight country roads divide the farmland into large rectangles, and small villages appear at regular intervals as clusters of buildings. Canals and irrigation channels add thin lines here and there.
