Dār as Salām lies in Sohag Governorate in Upper Egypt, within the Nile valley. Here the cultivated land forms a relatively narrow strip along the river, bounded on both sides by desert. From above, the town is a dense cluster of streets set within a patchwork of small, irregular fields.
Life in the valley has always depended on the river and on irrigation, and the map shows it. Canals and drains cross the farmland in fine lines, roads follow the canal banks, and villages sit as tight clusters dotted through the fields. Beyond the edge of the cultivation, the lines simply stop.
