Darlington lies in County Durham in north-east England, on the River Skerne just north of where it joins the Tees. It grew as a market town. Its large market place, with the medieval church of St Cuthbert beside it, is still the heart of the town centre and a clear open space on the map.
The town is best known for the Stockton and Darlington Railway, which opened in 1825 as the world's first public railway to use steam locomotives. Railway lines remain among the strongest features of the map, cutting through the town and converging on its stations. A museum on the historic line tells the story.
Around the centre, an inner ring road encloses the older streets, and Victorian terraces and later suburbs spread out in every direction.
