Darton is in the Metropolitan Borough of Barnsley in South Yorkshire, to the north-west of Barnsley town centre. The River Dearne flows through the area, and the town has grown around an older village core, with residential estates added in later decades. On a map it appears as a medium-sized settlement bordered by fields and wooded areas.
