Datun lies in the far north of Jiangsu, in Xuzhou's Pei County, on the low plain that stretches toward the lakes along the border with Shandong. The land is flat and intensively farmed. On a map the town appears as a compact set of straight roads and rectangular blocks, surrounded by field boundaries and villages arranged in a regular pattern.
The area is associated with coal mining, and much of its modern growth came with the mines and related industry developed in the second half of the twentieth century. As a result, the street layout is mostly planned rather than historic, with broad roads, residential compounds and industrial sites arranged around a small commercial centre.
A Datun map poster renders that planned geometry in clean black and white: the gridded town, the lines of rural roads, and the water that begins to appear toward the east, where the plain gives way to the lake district.
