Dhī as Sufāl lies in the highlands of Ibb Governorate, one of the greener parts of Yemen, where mountains catch more rainfall than most of the Arabian Peninsula. From above, the town's streets follow the terrain closely. Roads bend to keep to the contours, and buildings gather wherever the ground flattens enough to build.
Around the town, the landscape is shaped by slope and water. Valleys and seasonal wadis cut through the uplands, and the lines of the roads either follow them or climb away from them. Farmland spreads over the lower ground, and the pattern of settlement becomes lighter as the land grows steeper.
