Dianbu lies in the east of Shandong province, in the rolling farmland of the Shandong Peninsula. From above, the town looks orderly. A few main roads cross near its centre, and residential blocks and small industrial plots line them in neat rectangles. Beyond the built-up edge the pattern changes to long field strips and village clusters, each one a small knot of lanes.
The contrast is what makes this part of China interesting to map. The town's grid is recent and planned. The countryside around it follows older paths and the lines of irrigation ditches. In black and white, the two patterns sit side by side, the dense rectilinear core surrounded by a looser web of tracks.
