From above, the landscape is mostly flat and agricultural, with rice fields divided by irrigation channels and small roads. Villages cluster along these roads, so the built-up area appears as a series of linear settlements rather than a single compact centre.
The district is known across Indonesia as the home of Pesantren Tebuireng, a major Islamic boarding school founded by Hasyim Asy'ari, the founder of Nahdlatul Ulama.
