Döbeln lies in central Saxony, between Leipzig, Dresden and Chemnitz, on the Freiberger Mulde river. Its historic core occupies an island between two arms of the river. That setting has shaped the town for centuries and exposed it to severe floods, most recently in 2002 and 2013. Döbeln is also known for its horse-drawn tram, a revived historic line through the centre.
The island is the key to the map. It holds the market square, the main church and a tight weave of old streets, all encircled by water and linked to the rest of town by bridges. Beyond the river, later districts climb the valley slopes. Nineteenth-century blocks give way to residential streets, allotment gardens and industrial areas along the rail line.
