Don Benito is in the province of Badajoz, on the broad, flat plain of the Vegas del Guadiana. On a map the town has a compact centre of narrow streets and small squares, surrounded by wider planned neighbourhoods and ring roads. Beyond them, farmland spreads in large regular plots, divided by irrigation channels and straight rural roads that reflect decades of agricultural planning.
The Guadiana flows to the north, and water from the river's irrigation schemes has made this one of the most productive farming areas in Extremadura. Don Benito lies very close to Villanueva de la Serena, and the two towns have long been discussed as a single urban area, even going as far as a vote on merging them. On the map their built areas almost touch.
