Dongjia lies in the hilly country of north-eastern Chongqing, where long ridges and valleys run across the landscape. Towns here are shaped by the terrain, and Dongjia's map reflects that. Streets follow the level ground in the valleys, the built-up area stretches along them rather than spreading evenly, and the slopes rise directly behind the houses.
The countryside around it is cultivated with great care. Terraced fields climb the hillsides, small ponds and reservoirs sit in the folds of the land, and narrow roads wind between farms. On the map, these features give the surroundings a detailed, layered texture that frames the compact town.
