Downers Grove lies in DuPage County, west of Chicago, and its map is organised around a railway. The Metra BNSF line runs east–west through the village, and the compact downtown sits beside the tracks. North and south of it, residential streets spread out, a regular grid near the centre loosening into curving subdivisions and cul-de-sacs further out.
The village takes its name from Pierce Downer, who settled here in the 1830s. Downtown, the Tivoli Theatre, which opened in 1928, still shows films. Major routes frame the town: Interstate 88 passes to the north, Interstate 355 to the west, and the Morton Arboretum's large wooded grounds lie just beyond the northwestern edge.

Around Main Street and the station, the blocks are short and dense. It is the tightest part of the map and the historic core of the village, home to the Tivoli Theatre.

To the northwest, the Morton Arboretum's woodland creates a large open area with winding paths. It contrasts clearly with the suburban street pattern beside it.
