Droylsden lies in Tameside, on the eastern side of Greater Manchester. The map is dense with terraced streets and semi-detached estates, but water gives it structure. The Ashton Canal passes through the town, and near Fairfield it once met a branch toward Hollinwood, so waterways and towpaths slip between the housing.
The best-known historic feature is the Fairfield Moravian Settlement, founded in the eighteenth century. It is a small, carefully planned cluster of Georgian brick houses around a chapel and burial ground. Today the Metrolink tram line to Ashton-under-Lyne runs through the town, adding another straight line to the drawing.
