Dublin sits in the Tri-Valley area of the East Bay, where Interstates 580 and 680 cross. On a map, the interchange is the fixed point everything else relates to. The older, western part of the city lies near the junction, while newer planned neighbourhoods spread east across the valley floor, and the hills rise to the west.
The city has grown quickly in recent decades, with large new communities built on former military and agricultural land. The BART line ends at the Dublin/Pleasanton station along the freeway, linking the city directly to San Francisco and Oakland. Camp Parks, an Army training area, still occupies a large tract to the north.
