Dukuria is a densely settled locality in Dhaka Division, Bangladesh, at the south-western edge of the capital close to the Buriganga river. It belongs to the wider urban region that has spread outward from old Dhaka across low, flat land shaped by water. From above it shows as a closely packed grain of small blocks and narrow lanes, broken by the lines of creeks and river channels.
Life in this part of greater Dhaka is closely tied to the river, which has served as a route for boats, trade and industry for centuries. Like many neighbourhoods around the capital, the area has grown quickly as people arrived from the countryside, and its map records that growth in tightly spaced streets and buildings that fill almost every available plot.
