Dunhou lies in central Jiangxi, in the hilly country of the Gan River basin near the city of Ji'an. From above, the landscape is a patchwork of rice fields, ponds and low wooded hills, and the town is a compact cluster where roads meet. Its streets are practical rather than grand.
