Dushan is the seat of a county in southern Guizhou, in the Qiannan Buyei and Miao Autonomous Prefecture. The region is famous for its karst landscape, and the town's map shows it clearly. Streets follow a valley floor, and steep, rounded hills press in from the sides, leaving little room for a regular grid.
Roads bend to find passes between the hills, and the built-up area stretches along the flatter ground instead of expanding evenly outward. Small rivers and streams run through the valley, and newer districts have been added where the land allows. In a Dushan map poster that limit becomes the design, with dense streets set against wide areas of empty hill country.
Buyei and Miao communities have long lived in this part of Guizhou, and villages across the surrounding hills keep their own traditions.
