Echuca sits on the southern bank of the Murray River in northern Victoria, across from Moama in New South Wales. From above, the river curves past the town's northern edge, and the Campaspe River joins the Murray close by. The town's grid of streets spreads south from the waterfront. Bridges link the two states across the water.
In the nineteenth century Echuca was one of Australia's busiest inland ports, and paddle steamers carried wool and goods along the Murray. The historic port area and its long red gum wharf remain, and paddle steamers still run on the river. That history gives the town a strong link to the water.
An Echuca map poster shows a town defined by rivers and the state border. The Murray's broad curve and its meeting with the Campaspe shape the composition. The bridges cross to Moama, and the grid of streets fills the land to the south. Seen from above, it is easy to understand how a river port grew into a town.
