Eeklo lies in East Flanders, roughly between Ghent and Bruges, near the edge of the flat Meetjesland region. From above, the town has a clear, compact centre around its market square, with streets radiating outward and gradually giving way to residential districts. Railway lines and main roads cut through in long, straight lines typical of the Flemish lowlands.
The town hall and belfry on the market square form the historic heart of Eeklo; the belfry belongs to the group of Belgian and French belfries on the UNESCO World Heritage List. North of the town, the land opens into polders drained by canals, whose straight lines give the map a crisp geometric edge.
To the south-east lies the forest domain of Het Leen, a large wooded area that appears as a calm, soft expanse on the map. An Eeklo map poster balances these elements: the dense centre, the ruled lines of canals and railways, and the open woods and fields that frame the town.
