Ehen Hudag is the seat of Alxa Right Banner in the far west of Inner Mongolia. From above, the town is a small, orderly cluster of streets surrounded by open terrain. The map is mostly quiet space, and the built area sits within it like a single deliberate mark on a large sheet of paper.
The wider region is known for the Badain Jaran Desert, one of China's great sand seas, which lies to the north. In black and white the settlement's lines read clearly because very little competes with them. Roads leave town in a few straight strokes, crossing ground where a map shows few other features for long distances.
