El Achir lies on the high plateaus of eastern Algeria, a short distance west of Bordj Bou Arreridj. On a map it appears as a compact settlement surrounded by open agricultural land, with roads running out in several directions across the gently rolling terrain. The relief is modest, so the town's shape is set mainly by its roads and the pattern of new construction.
Like many towns in the region, El Achir has expanded considerably in recent years.
