El Amria lies in north-western Algeria, in Aïn Témouchent province, on the agricultural plain that stretches west from Oran. The Mediterranean is a short distance to the north. From above, the town is compact and fairly regular, a cluster of straight streets set in wide, open fields.
In the colonial period the town was called Lourmel, and like many settlements of that era its centre was laid out on a planned grid. Newer neighbourhoods have spread around that core in looser patterns, and the difference is still visible on the map.
An El Amria map poster shows the town together with its farmland. Long roads head east toward Oran and west toward Aïn Témouchent, and field boundaries fill the space around the built-up area. The low hills near the coast and the wide sebkha basin toward Oran give the wider frame some shape.
