El Crucero lies in the highlands south of Managua, in the Managua department of Nicaragua. Sitting well above the capital, it has a noticeably cooler climate. On a map the town stretches along the main road that crosses the uplands, with houses and side streets branching off it, and farms and wooded slopes filling the spaces in between.
The name means the crossing, and the town still works as a waypoint on the road running south from the capital toward the Pacific coast. The surrounding hills have long been used for coffee farms and country houses, drawing people from Managua looking for fresh air and cooler evenings.
