El Kala sits on Algeria's north-eastern coast, close to the border with Tunisia. The town wraps around a small harbour on the Mediterranean, and from above the shoreline and the little port are its most distinctive features. Streets climb gently back from the water, forming a compact centre with roads leading inland and along the coast.
Just behind the town lies El Kala National Park, an area of forests, dunes and wetlands. Its lakes, including Lac Oubeïra and Lac Tonga, appear on the map as broad, soft-edged shapes among the roads. The area is recognised for its birdlife and is one of the most important wetland zones in North Africa.
Historically the town was known as La Calle and was long associated with coral fishing. An El Kala map poster balances sea, harbour, town and lakes in one frame, a rare coastal composition in which open water appears on more than one side.
