El Mgarsa lies on the eastern side of Djerba, the large, flat island off southern Tunisia in the Gulf of Gabès. The island has almost no hills, so its roads spread freely across the land. On the map they show a loose pattern of houses, lanes and walled plots rather than a tight urban grid. The sea is never far away in any direction.
Djerba is known for its whitewashed houses and olive groves, and for a long history of trade and fishing along its coast. The eastern shore is where most of the island's beaches and hotels are. On the map, the settled inland areas give way to a smooth coastline and a strip of resort roads that runs roughly parallel to the water.
