El Tejar lies in the central highlands of Guatemala, in the department of Chimaltenango. On a map the town shows a simple grid of streets, crossed by the main highway running east to west. Around the town, the land is cut by ravines and farmland, giving the surrounding area an irregular, uneven pattern.
The town's name refers to tile making, and El Tejar is known for its production of bricks and roof tiles, made in local workshops and kilns. The Pan-American Highway passes through, linking the town to Chimaltenango and Guatemala City.
