Ellenabad is in the Sirsa district of Haryana, close to the state border with Rajasthan. The land here is very flat, and that shows on the map. Roads and field boundaries run in long straight lines, and irrigation channels cut across the countryside at steady angles. The town itself is a compact cluster where these lines meet.
The name of the town is traditionally linked to Ellen, the wife of a British-era official. This makes it one of a handful of places in the region with a colonial-era name. Today it works as a local market centre for the surrounding farming villages. Its streets are densest around the older commercial core and thin out as they reach the fields.
