Emsdetten lies in the Steinfurt district of North Rhine-Westphalia, on the river Ems in the flat, green landscape of the Münsterland. As the name suggests, the river is part of the town's identity, and on a map it curves along the town's western side, with meadows and wooded strips following its banks.
The centre is compact, with streets radiating out towards the surrounding residential neighbourhoods. Beyond them, the typical Münsterland pattern takes over: open fields, small woods, hedgerows and individual farmsteads scattered across the land, connected by quiet country roads.
