Encrucijada lies in Villa Clara Province, in the lowlands of central Cuba north of Santa Clara. On the map the town is laid out in a clear, regular grid of streets, typical of Cuban country towns, with a central square and blocks extending evenly until they meet the surrounding fields.
The land around is flat and largely agricultural, historically devoted to sugarcane. An Encrucijada map poster shows that contrast with clarity: an orderly block of streets set within a plain crossed by a few roads, rail lines and field tracks. The town's name means crossroads in Spanish, fitting for a place defined by its routes.
Encrucijada is known in Cuba as the birthplace of Abel Santamaría, a revolutionary figure killed after the 1953 attack on the Moncada Barracks. A museum dedicated to him stands in the town, and his name appears on many places throughout the country.
