Ereğli lies in the southeast of Konya Province, where the wide, flat interior plain of Central Anatolia meets the foothills of the Taurus range. From above, the town is a compact centre surrounded by a broad belt of cultivated land. Roads radiate out towards Konya, Karaman and the mountain passes to the south.
In antiquity the town was known as Heraclea Cybistra. A short distance south, at İvriz, a well-known Neo-Hittite rock relief shows a local king before a storm god. It is a reminder that this corner of the plain has been settled for a very long time.

The surrounding plain is almost completely flat. The ruled lines of fields and farm tracks create an even, calm backdrop for the more irregular urban core.
Foothills to the south
South of the town, the land begins to rise towards the Taurus Mountains. Roads there take on curves, in contrast to the straight lines of the plain.
