Erong is a small town in the southeastern part of Chongqing municipality, a mountainous area near the borders of Hunan and Guizhou. From above, the town fits into the gaps between hills. Its streets gather on the flatter valley ground, and roads wind out along the contours toward neighbouring villages.
This corner of Chongqing is known for its steep terrain, forested ridges and small rivers, and for the ethnic minority communities that live in the area. On the map, Erong appears as a narrow, dense cluster. Around it, winding roads and streams form most of the pattern, and the hills show as open space.
