Esik Map Poster & Print
Esik, also written Issyk, lies east of Almaty where the Trans-Ili Alatau range meets the steppe. The town is built on a gentle slope, and on the map its streets run roughly in a grid, tilted toward the plain. The Esik river comes out of a gorge above the town. Orchards and gardens fill the gaps between houses, a reminder of the region's long association with apples.
The town is known well beyond Kazakhstan for the Issyk kurgan, a burial mound nearby where archaeologists found the Golden Man around 1970. The gold-covered Saka warrior's costume has become a national symbol. Up the gorge, Lake Issyk was largely drained by a mudflow in 1963, an event still remembered locally.
An Esik map poster contrasts the orderly grid of the lower town with the sudden steepness of the mountains to the south. Roads stop where the slopes begin. The river's path out of the gorge gives the composition a natural axis, and the picture reads clearly as a town at the foot of high peaks.

Kurgan country
Burial mounds of the Saka era stand in the area around town. The Golden Man was found in one of them, which gives Esik its archaeological fame.
