Eslam Qaleh, also written Islam Qala, is a town in Herat Province at Afghanistan's western border with Iran. It is the country's main crossing on the road between Herat and Mashhad. That role shapes its map: a major highway, customs areas and truck yards give the town a practical, linear form.
The land around it is arid and flat, part of the wide lowland along the Hari River basin. Settlement clusters along the highway and fades quickly into open desert and farmland wherever irrigation reaches. Straight roads and rectangular compounds read clearly against the empty ground.
