Esparza lies in the province of Puntarenas, on Costa Rica's Pacific side. The town sits on the lower slopes above the coastal plain, and on a map its streets form a regular grid, a pattern typical of Spanish colonial planning.
Esparza is among the older Spanish settlements in Costa Rica, founded in the sixteenth century. Its central square and church still anchor the town, with streets extending outward in even blocks toward the surrounding farmland.
