Esquías is a municipality in the northern part of the Comayagua Department of Honduras, in hilly highland country. Most of its population lives in villages and hamlets spread across the hills, and the municipal seat is the local centre. On a map this reads as a small cluster of streets surrounded by long, winding roads.
The town follows a pattern common in the region, with a compact group of blocks around a central area and streets that soon turn into unpaved tracks. Beyond it, roads follow the ridges and valleys. The outer parts of the map are shaped as much by the terrain as by any plan, and the land sets the direction of each route.
