Farmington lies in the north-west corner of New Mexico, close to the Four Corners, where New Mexico, Arizona, Utah and Colorado meet. The city stands at the confluence of the San Juan, Animas and La Plata rivers, which is unusual for the dry high desert around it.
On a map, the rivers shape the city. Green, tree-lined corridors follow the water through town, and the street grid bends to fit around them. Beyond the edges, the desert opens into mesas and washes. The Navajo Nation lies to the west, and the rock formation of Shiprock stands in the distance.
