Feira, the town at the heart of the municipality of Santa Maria da Feira, lies in the Aveiro district of northern Portugal, a short distance south of Porto. Its defining landmark is the medieval castle on a wooded hill above the centre. On a map, that hill appears as a rounded island of green, with the town's streets curving around its base.
The older streets descend from the castle area in irregular lines that follow the slope, while newer districts spread across the surrounding valleys along the main roads. The wider municipality is densely settled but green, a mix of small towns, industry, woodland and farmland that fills the map with fine, scattered detail rather than a single urban block.
