Feira Nova sits in the interior of Pernambuco, west of Recife, in country where the humid coastal zone begins to give way to drier uplands. From above, the town is a tight cluster of streets set among rolling fields, with a handful of roads leaving the centre toward neighbouring municipalities. The land around it defines its outline as much as its buildings do.
The name translates as new fair, a reminder of how many towns in this part of the Brazilian northeast took shape around a market square. On the map, the town shows a main axis lined with blocks and side streets branching off at irregular angles. At the edges the pattern becomes softer and looser as the town turns into smallholdings and open ground.
