Fenyi is a county town in western Jiangxi, administered by the city of Xinyu. On the map it appears as a compact urban area set in a valley, with a river running through it and low forested hills rising on several sides. Newer districts extend along the flatter ground, while older streets cluster closer to the water.
The surrounding countryside is typical of this part of southern China: rice fields in the lowlands, bamboo and forest on the slopes, and small villages linked by narrow roads. From above this gives the map a layered quality, with the town as a dense knot of lines and the land around it drawn more lightly.
