Finchley lies in the London Borough of Barnet, in north London, and it is really a group of neighbourhoods: Church End, East Finchley, North Finchley and Finchley Central among them. The map is built around old routes out of the city, above all the Great North Road, now the High Road, which runs north through the area lined with shops and terraces.
Across this pattern cuts the North Circular Road, a wide arterial route that splits Finchley roughly east to west and shows as one of the boldest lines on the map. The Northern line runs through too, with stations along its branches. Between the roads, Victorian, Edwardian and interwar streets fill the blocks, interrupted by parks and the green corridor of Dollis Brook.
Finchley is also known far beyond London as the constituency Margaret Thatcher represented in Parliament for more than three decades.
