Floral Park is a village in western Nassau County, sitting on the border with Queens. From above, it is a close, regular grid of residential streets. The Long Island Rail Road cuts through at a slight angle, and the station area and commercial strip around Tulip Avenue form its centre.
The village takes its name from its origins: in the late nineteenth century, the seedsman John Lewis Childs ran large flower farms and a seed business here, and he gave the village a floral identity that survives in its street names. Belmont Park racetrack lies just beside the village.
On paper, the grid has a satisfying regularity, broken by the rail line and the large open area of Belmont Park at the edge. A Floral Park map poster shows a classic Long Island village at the point where the city ends and the suburbs begin.
