Florence, Arizona sits in the Sonoran Desert southeast of Phoenix, on the Gila River. Founded in the 1860s, it is the county seat of Pinal County. From above, its original downtown is a small, regular grid. Around it, newer subdivisions are laid out in curving streets, and beyond them the desert opens out in every direction.
The historic core holds a well-preserved collection of territorial-era buildings, including the old Pinal County Courthouse. Florence is also home to a large state prison complex, which accounts for a notable part of its official population and occupies a distinct block of land on the map.
