Flores sits in the sertão of Pernambuco, in the valley of the Rio Pajeú, one of the region's defining rivers. From above, the town forms a compact grid close to the riverbed, with streets aligned to the main road and the water. Beyond the edge of town, the map opens into dry countryside crossed by dirt roads and seasonal streams.
The Pajeú gives its name to the whole microregion, and its channel is the strongest line on any map of Flores. In the dry months it can shrink considerably, yet its course still organises the landscape: the town, the farmland and the roads all follow it.
