Florida is a municipality in Valle del Cauca, on the eastern side of the Cauca Valley. It sits where the level valley floor meets the foothills of the Cordillera Central. On a map, the town centre follows the regular grid common in Colombian towns, laid out around a central plaza, with blocks in neat rows.
West of the town, the valley is given over largely to sugar cane, which appears as large geometric fields cut by straight farm roads. East of it, the ground rises quickly, and roads begin to twist as they climb toward the mountains.
A Florida map poster shows that double landscape. There is an orderly grid and open, flat cane land on one side, and on the other the first curving lines of the Andes. It is a clear portrait of a valley town at the edge of the mountains.
