Floridia lies in the south-east of Sicily, a short distance inland from Syracuse, in a plain of orchards and citrus groves below the Hyblaean plateau. On a map the town stands out for its orderly layout: a network of straight streets and rectangular blocks, compact and clearly bounded, with country roads leading away toward neighbouring towns and the coast.
Like much of the Val di Noto, Floridia was hit by the great earthquake of 1693 and rebuilt in the decades that followed, which helps explain its regular plan and the baroque churches in the centre. The countryside around it remains closely tied to agriculture, with fields and groves marked out by dry-stone walls and farm tracks.
