Fontana is a city in the Argentine province of Chaco, on the western side of the Greater Resistencia urban area. The land is almost perfectly flat, and the street plan reflects it: a regular checkerboard of square blocks laid across the plain, with a few wide avenues leading east towards the provincial capital.
The Chaco lowlands are very wet, and water plays a big role in the map. Shallow lagoons and marshy low ground interrupt the grid in several places, leaving irregular, open shapes where streets end or bend around them. Near the edges of the city, the blocks give way to smallholdings, drainage ditches and open fields.
The Fontana map poster shows this simple but striking contrast between a rigid grid and the soft outlines of water. Few places show so clearly how a planned layout adapts to wet ground.
