Formiga is in the centre-west of Minas Gerais, and from above it looks like many towns in the state's interior. A dense core of streets sits on rolling ground, and the grid bends where it meets slopes and small watercourses. Main roads lead out across farmland in several directions.
The municipality is part of the region around the large Furnas reservoir, created by damming the Rio Grande, so broad bodies of water with branching arms shape the wider landscape. The local economy relies on agriculture, livestock and commerce serving the surrounding area, and the town acts as a service centre for smaller places nearby.
